If you have a Facebook page, personal or Fan page, getting your message out to a targeted audience is more competitive than ever. Most of us follow tons of pages inundated with updates from friends and family; add fan page updates and it becomes feed overload. How do you weed out the stuff you don’t want to see and only show feeds that interest you? Facebook Interests.
Now you can create a personalized feed where you can see updates from pages you only want to see.
When you create or subscribe to a list, you’ll see the best posts from that list in your main news feed. Your lists will also appear in the Interests section of your bookmarks. Simply click the list’s name to see all the recent posts and activity from the Pages and people featured in the list, without overwhelming your main news feed. (Source: Facebook)
In this tutorial, I will show you how to create your own custom interest lists:
Go to your Interests page and click the Add Interests button. (If you are already logged into Facebook, this link will take you directly to your interest page or you can scroll down to the bottom left hand side of your home page to find “Interests”.

Click on the word “MORE” and you will be able to create your interests.

From here you can create a customized list. You can type in some key words to find other groups or create your own. Popular groups will show up in your list and you have the option to subscribe. You will not see (above) this screen (like mine) if you haven’t created any lists.

If you decide to create your own list, you will only be shown members in your Facebook account or pages you have “liked”. If you create a list tailored to a particular “niche” you can still add other groups not in your list later. When you click on a picture (like below), it will add them to your list. If you don’t want to add them, simply click on the picture again to remove them.
Note: Lists you create aren’t just for Facebook Fan pages, but for friends and family too. If you have tons of family members and don’t want to miss any messages in your feed, create a “private” list so you never miss their messages.

On this page, you see all the people you have placed in your list. This is where you create your list name and set the privacy settings. You can change privacy settings at anytime from Public to private.

Tip: You can add your Interests to your favorite section on the top right hand side of your Facebook page for faster access.

Once you click the “wheel”, click on Add to Interest List and your created lists will appear.

This last option raises some questions about “Facebook Likes” and the point in subscribing to pages. Companies work hard to increase likes to their page and this tends to defeat the purpose. On the upside, people subscribing to your feed haven’t actually liked you, but still have an interest in your feed.
Question: Are you using Interest lists? Do they simplify or cut the amount of information going through your personal feed?
Now you can create a personalized feed where you can see updates from pages you only want to see.
What are interests lists?
Interest lists are an optional way to organize the content you’re interested in on Facebook. You can create your own interest lists based on the things you care about, or subscribe to other people’s lists. For example, you could create a Top Indie Bands list that features bands’ Pages and public updates from band members.
- You can give them custom names
- Keep interest pages public or private
- Share them with friends and family
- Allow others to Subscribe

How do you add pages to a list later?
When you visit a Fan page, you can easily add them to your list and follow their feed easily.
Once you click the “wheel”, click on Add to Interest List and your created lists will appear.

Let me know how this works out for you. I like the idea of putting things in compartments so I can see only what I want to see and flush out the rest.

Hi Sonia,
I swear I learn something new every time I visit you
I have seen that little “Interests” section but never bothered to look at it – I like that you can set certain things to public or private. I’ll have to play around with that next.
Thanks and have a great day!

Hi Christine! The private option is what I like most about it because I can tailor sections of my Facebook page the way I want it. I don’t have that many people on my page, but it is nice to see marketing stuff in one spot instead of mixed in with family updates. Thanks girl for stopping by and I appreciate the compliment.

Hey Sonia,
Imagine my surprise as I’m reading through your post and I see my smiling face in your images. Hot dog, that just makes me smile even more.
You know I heard about this when it first came out and I just started adding people and then I found out what a big mistake I had made. I didn’t get the jest of it all so I went and undid all of that.
I definitely appreciate your explanation a heck of a lot better. I think that’s what I need to do and spend some time going through this and adding my interests. I admit, I would prefer seeing some more information of things I’m interested in so I’m going to bookmark this page and do this this weekend.
Thank you so much for taking the time to take us through how to do this Sonia. This really was very helpful.

Thanks Ms Adrienne! Tutorials can be so time consuming, but it is great to see the happy faces that enjoy it and get something out of it them self. I could litter this blog with “How-To” posts, but then it would take up allot of my time. I try and space these out when its something I feel that hasn’t been over saturated. Thanks Adrienne for your comment and I hope you had a great weekend.

Super tutorial, this is a feature that I bet a lot of people aren’t using just because they don’t know how, or maybe because they don’t even know it exists. Facebook throws out these new things without any help and I’m sure most people have no idea what’s new or what to do with it. Fortunately there are people like you out there to tell them! I have not used lists for this reason. I only use them to segment business stuff from personal stuff. For me, I just don’t like to be bothered with the management. And I tend not to “like” or follow pages because I’m one of those crabby people who doesn’t want to give any information to Facebook that they can sell about my interests
I have heard some of the controversy about likign vs people putting a page on a list. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter so long as people are paying attention. I know brand pages want to see that high fan count but that’s more about vanity. if people are putting your page on a list and following it, that’s better than someone who likes the page maybe because you offered a promo but then just ignores you. Thanks for the in-depth information here, this is really useful stuff!

I know what you mean when it comes to tons of features with no real direction. I like Facebook just like the next person, but their lack of makes me wonder if they are all robots. Maybe I am just more detailed oriented than most and really like information to be explicit and thorough. At least if I can understand it I will know if it’s a feature I want to be bothered with. Thanks Carol for your awesome input and I got a great idea for a new post too!

That’s excellent, Sonia!
Well, another thing I didn’t know about that you can do with facebook.
I think I have to start adding my own interests and be more selective. I don’t have the amount of followers that can be a problem, yet, even though there’s a couple of people that I’d love to delete or unfriend.
Anyway, that was a great tutorial

Great info Sonia, I started to do this but I don’t think I got to the part with the pages. Very good info to pass along for those with customers too for our pages. Many people who are casual users of Facebook probably are not aware of this one. Thanks Sonia for sharing with us.

Hi Lisa! I like to think I am casual too, but I love seeing new posts or information from blogs that I can’t always follow on Facebook too. It cuts down on going everywhere and I get to see topics that either interest me or don’t. Also, I like the idea of weeding out what I don’t want to see and viewing what I do want to see. Thanks for stopping by. How are things? Gearing up for winter?

Miss Hajra! How are you? This option is great because you can put certain brands or websites into categories only for you or you can share it with everyone else. Either way, you don’t get information overloading your personal feed. If you use this, let me know how it works out for you?

Sonia,
This is some great advise! I didn’t even know about “interests” until you told me, that is how observant I am, I don’t even look on the sidebar of my FB home page. I am excited to start doing this. I am surely going to subscribe to some lists, see how it works first hand then probably start my own list.
Thanks again for this awesome advise!

Hey Allie, you know when I started using this I realized that you don’t have to actually like anyone’s page at all anymore. I am not sure how this will pan out for people that really want “likes” to build their numbers, but it is still another great option to remain private and not give out too much information about you.
