Thanks to Sonia for letting me write in this arena. Even though my blog is my bread and butter, I like to prove every now and then that I’m more than just a typical humor-blogger.
I have 10 years of experience in Sales and Marketing. I have worked for pet food companies, distribution centers, and even free-lanced for a while when times got tough. I always knew the term “know your audience” but it was never fully clear to me until I moved from California to Idaho. I went from a racially diverse environment to a town with a white population over 94%. In California, you knew not to talk about Religion or Politics when in polite conversation or a professional setting. In Eastern Idaho, I had job interviewers asking whether or not I was Mormon. I was in shock. After 3 months of unemployment, I realized I had to adapt or drown. I started working at a Car Lot selling Chevrolets, and would mimic my customer. If they were a cowboy, I’d let my drawl get a little lazy. If a family of 12 came in, I knew to put my coffee away and say “gosh darn” a lot. Most importantly, it taught me the value of relating to your audience. You have to be like them, or else they’re going to think you’re “one of them.” I am now working as a Sales Manager and Business Consultant. I travel to 6 states in the area, helping small businesses grow, re-merchandise, and succeed against the invading Big-Box giants. And I do it in jeans. As disappointing as it is, my suits are collecting dust. I don’t get to look professional anymore, because suits = ‘city boy’ in this area of the country. If you’re one of them, you don’t undertand me, and are of no help.
Oil and Water
If you end up in a ‘fish out of water’ environment like I did, the best things to do are:
- Observe. Eyes open, mouth shut, and blend into the background.
- Learn the community. What drives the people in the area? Are there common likes/dislikes/political views? (This is easier to do in a low-population area like mine and not, say the Chicago metro area…)
- Who owns this town? Which businesses are successful and why? In the pet food arena, I looked to see what brands were selling, which salesman was successful in pushing their wares, and why stores sell what they sell.

Hi Brandon,
What a darn good post you have here!
Whatever you are doing, you are doing it right. Being from another country and continent all together (France) I’ve learn how to adapt to people around me a long, long time ago, and I couldn’t agree more with you point here.
If you feel that had to adapt going from one state to another, I sure did feel it when I moved from Paris to New York. My work brings me to speak to French people on a regular basis, and every time I do, the difference in culture is brought back to me.
We are a funny kind of animal, we like people to whom we can relate to and at the same time we are attracted by people who stand out! I guess that in your case it’s the later who brings you so many followers. I’ve got to pick some of your brain. Can I do that?
What the heck is masturbating cats anyway?
Great post, and have a great day!

Welcome to Sonia’s home Brandon and we thoroughly enjoyed having you.
I’ve never visited your blog but I bet it’s a LOT of fun. What a great whit about you and I enjoyed this post very much. I know exactly what you mean my friend.
I live in Texas and when we have New Yorkers head our way they soon learn to take it down several notches or they will be striking out so fast they won’t know what hit them. Oh yeah, we do things more relaxed over here. I’m sure your move to Idaho was a very rude awakening.
Sounds like you’ve done just fine for yourself and are even teaching us a thing or two now. I love that!
Thanks again and enjoyed the post. Delightful!

Thanks for the welcome Adrienne! I remember going to Missouri back in the 90′s to live and it was a total culture shock for me coming California. I was told I talked to fast and everything was more at a slower pace. I got use to it, but being 21 at that time, just didn’t sit well for me. Looking back, I still wish that low key lifestyle.

Brandon, this was great. What I love about your blog is that its uniquely you. Just like Q, you guys do your own thing and speak your mind. Something I respect, admire and love to read. There are so many flavors out there and not many find their true voice. It takes a while and you proved that you didn’t have to sound like the masses to be successful in your own right. Thanks B for inspiring me to stay me!

Since I’m not a WP guy, I can’t find a way to reply individually (I know, I know…).
Thank you all for the kind love. I am honored to come here and share my stories with Sonia and her community. If anyone ever wants to pick my brain (like Sylviane), feel free to email me at lostinidaho@ymail.com, or just leave me a comment on my blog.
After all. I blog, therefore I love to chat.

Wow, I so agree with this Brandon.
Here’s my example. As a part time Networker with a full time job, I find it funny when someone who is a full time entrepreneur tries to relate to us part timers in a meaningful way.
It just doesn’t ring true. It’s like a guy wearing a suit in the middle of Idaho!

LMAO! That was great Bob. I think that is what I look for when I am buying or reading. Not everything will relate fully, but finding some type of common ground helps bridge the gap between you and person delivering the message. Thanks Bob for stopping by!

Wow, Sonia, my RSS feed is getting busy thanks to you
This hits home because there are 2 points I take to heart:
1. You totally have to know your niche and
2. You cannot be all things… or most things… or even some things… to everyone.
Brandon, that’s a pretty wild story of how you adapted to a completely different environment. I give you so much credit, it is not an easy thing to do! I’m looking forward to reading more on your blog.

I agree, but for some it takes a while to figure it out at least it did for me. I was all over the place and glad I got that down. What I love about Brandon is that he doesn’t bit his tongue and he is tactfully brilliant with his writing skills. Thank you Carol for taking the time to read this post and your visit.

It was a fun challenge: Adapt and adjust, without lying or becoming two-faced. I don’t lie to my clients, and I’m not fake in front of them. I just mirror them a bit, and let them lead the conversation (with me steering, of course).
Thanks for the fantastic comment!

Cat Alexandra
Hey Brandon,
What a great and fun read!
I love your edge. I get a sense of it here and am looking forward to checking you out on your on website.
Knowing one’s niche – a challenge indeed. Easier said than done til you’ve gotten your face a bit bloody in the process of discovering who wants to hear what you have to say. – Or so has been my experience.
I had to giggle a little bit when I read about your little culture shock when you moved to Idaho. I know that feeling well (all though it’s a little bit of a distant memory nowadays). I’ve been a full time earner of my own entrepreneurial volition and just because I’m pretty freakin savvy (if I can toot my own horn here) for a little over 12 years…but I have had my own “structured work” experiences too. One of those experiences was as a consultant for a large outfit out of Washington, DC where I took on a 5 1/2 state region of clients (mostly Fortune 500s or under). A large group of my clients were in Idaho…I can remember waking up in places like Ketchum wondering where on God’s Green Earth I was that day…and feeling like a fish out of water there.
You definitely need to grasp the lay of the land to thrive.
Sounds like you’ve flipped the script on the whole situation, good for you!
Great read…will be checking out your blog.

…I do have to warn you… I am a businessman and a professional. I know how to carry myself when I’m ‘suited up.’
My blog is not professional. At all. Think of it like my venting spot. My bar, if you will, with the world as my bartender.
Consider yourself warned.

I loved the humour here (oh sorry you U.S guys spell that without the ‘u’) but there was a very key point about mimicking the body language or just language(!) of your prospective client or customer. I was taught this during HR training at one of my first jobs as a very effective method of making people feel at ease with you so I loved reading this.
I too felt like a fish out of water when I visited Vegas last year from the cooler climate of a British Summer to desert heat that took my breath away – I embraced the “natives” and allowed the mickey to be taken about my accent (but I don’t have one…….. it’s you guys that do ! And I love it)
Great post,

Hey Nicky, I love British accents and I use to work with a lady that had a lovely voice. When I travel to the South or Midwest, I get told I speak to fast (ok, I am from California) and to slow down. I laugh about it, but it’s amazing how different we all are from state to state.

You never understand the “when in Rome” saying until you’re surrounded by Romans.
I highly recommend this to everyone in business. Get out of your comfort zone, and in a big way. You’ll fail from time to time, but it will teach you to fail faster, correct your course faster, and become a better person.
