When I first decided to joined the online marketing world, I had no idea that there were several different ways to make money online. Back then, I was introduced to network marketing and I thought that was it.
What about you? Are you a bit confused about the different channels you could use to make money online? If the answer is yes, let me tell you what the 3 main channels to make money online are and clarify the confusion that exists among them.
The three main online channels to make money online are network marketing, affiliate marketing and blogging.
Network Marketing
Network marketing is when you join a company as a distributor to sell their products or services for a commission. In network marketing it is your responsibility to build what is called a down-line, which is the list of people who join the company through you. When someone joins the company under your name, you will be making a percentage of the commission of the products that they sell. Usually, in network marketing, even though there might be some company conference calls for the purpose of educating their members, it is your responsibilities as the head of your down-line to educate your people about advertising their business and recruiting people to join. This said, each individual may or may not succeed depending on their drive and persistence. Recruiting for distributors is a very important part of network marketing besides the fact that you might want to sell your products or services to potential customers as well. The reason why recruiting is so important is that you make a commission not only on the volume of your own sales, but also on the volume of the sales of your down-line. This is the basis of what we call residual income. Joining a network marketing company is usually not free. There may be 2 or 3 different levels at which you can come in and in many cases it includes an auto-ship membership to the product or service that you are going to be selling. This might not be the case for every single company, but it is for the ones I know. Can you make money with network marketing? Yes, of course you can. I personally know some wealthy people who have made a lot of money with their network marketing business, but it will only work if you work it. However, that’s the case for everything in life, isn’t it?Things to Know About Network Marketing
- Avoid making your decision to join a company based ONLY on the product they are selling
- Make sure you get along with the person who is going to get you in (your up-line)
- If you find the company from the company’s own website do not join through someone they impose on you. Do your own up-line shopping. Having the right person to guide you can really make a difference in your business.
- Make sure that you understand the rules and regulations about commissions called “the compensation plan”. Not all network marketing companies are equal in this regard.
Affiliate Marketing
Some people may be under the impression that affiliate marketing doesn’t require as much work as network marketing does. This is most likely based on the fact that people who enter the affiliate marketing world have a huge misunderstanding about it. Affiliate marketing works differently than network marketing in many ways, but it doesn’t mean that you won’t have anything to do. There are two types of products that you can sell through affiliate marketing. 1) You can sell digital products, such as eBooks, audios, or software type products or 2) You can sell physical products as an affiliate through a company’s website. They will pay you a percentage commission on each item that you sell. The difference between network marketing and affiliate marketing is that the commission you are making is solely based on each individual sale and they is no such thing as residual income as it is the case with network marketing. On the other hand, you do not need to recruit people to join your business or know who your customers are as it is the case in network marketing. Because of these differences, people are led believe that there is less work involved in affiliate marketing than network marketing. However, this is not so. It’s not because you don’t have to deal with your customer one on one that you don’t have to build some type of relationship with them. You most certainly do. When it comes to affiliate marketing you need to choose a “niche” and stick to it. As I heard a successful affiliate marketer say not long ago, “you can’t be everything to everyone”. That’s so true. You’d be losing out if you’d tried. Pick a niche and stick to it. Develop as much of a friendly relationship as you can with your potential customers. The best way to reach such potential customers and get to know them is by blogging about your niche. The rule of thumb is informing your market on a regular basis for free.Things to Know About Affiliate Marketing
- Do not pick more than one niche at a time, especially if you are just starting out
- Concentrate on one blog and one blog only to promote your products
- Do not put your BEST articles on article directories and other Web 2.0 sites (save them for your own site/blog) and use article marketing and web 2.0 for branding yourself
- Do not pick over crowded niches you couldn’t possibly compete with
- There is no residual income in affiliate marketing

Is Affiliate Marketing for you?
Blogging
While blogging should be a big part of the affiliate and network marketers’ businesses as well. I have found out over the years that very few of them know much about blogging (expect for a precious few). As a matter of fact, this was my case as well before I started blogging seriously, so to speak. In my experience I’ve realized that the person making money from blogging will pay much more attention to their blog than the affiliate marketer would. Most affiliate marketers are concentrating 80 percent of their time doing article marketing and other types of advertising, while only about 20 percent of their time working on their own blog. The main mistake they are making is creating blogs with no personal touch. Many of them don’t even have an avatar with their real face. The real blogger does. How do you Make Money Blogging?
As a blogger you need to create excellent and valuable content on a weekly basis to attract more and more readers as time goes on. You need to interact with other bloggers on a regular basis and build traffic to your blog. You can create your own product or service and advertise it on your about me page and other parts of your blog. You should also have a freebie that you can offer on you blog for people to receive in exchange for their name and email address. Once you have built a decent list, you can promote products for sale to such list that will trust you over time. Once your blog has enough traffic you can also make money with advertisement on your blog. You can do this using Google Adsense, have your own banners on which you will make sales’ commission, or by selling advertising spots. Your success in making money blogging will be based on the amount of readers and followers you are going to build. In this regard, all 3 main channels to make money online are equal.Things to Know About Blogging
- You need to create high quality content on a very regular basis
- You need to promote YOURSELF as an expert in your niche
- You need to show your real face to the world (don’t hide behind an avatar)
- You need to find your own voice to stand out from everyone else
- You need to build relationships with other bloggers
- You need to build relationships with your readers

Affiliate marketing can be extremely helpful if you know how to do it right. Choosing the right niche is the first step. Blogging can also bring you a lot of money, but it’s usually harder to win a large amount of money, imho. Unless you work your ass off!

Hi Steve,
I would say that all of them take work, and most of all “the right work”.
I know what I’m talking about because for 2 whole years I was doing the marry-go-round. I thought I was working, but I wasn’t doing it right, and it cost me dearly. To start with I didn’t know what the main differences were and I realized that I’m not the only one, thus this article
Thanks for your feedbacks, Steve

When I started out years ago I had my own coupon website. It was hard work and I mean hard work. Updating and staying on top of new deals might not be for everyone.
Although I liked what I was doing, it lacked interaction and I had created something that ran itself and no conversation. I think anyone can make money online, but it has to be secondary to building relationships online. After 3 yrs and little money, I closed shop. I still gets hundreds of emails weekly. At least come Christmas time, I am first in line for coupon discounts! Great post Sylviane.

Hi Sonia,
Thanks. Yes, no matter what you do online, it’s going to take some work. I had never heard of coupon sites. That’s interesting. Like you said, just about anyone can make money online, yet a lot of people who are trying to, can’t.
Thanks for posting by guest post, Sonia, as always and have a fantastic week!

Sylviane,
I love when someone simply spells “it” out for me. And you have done that.
I knew about affiliate marketing and blogging as vehicles for online income but the network marketing is new to me. I am aware of it offline but not online.
Thanks for the ideas.

That’s what I was trying to do. Make it simple and clear enough for people to understand what the differences are and what would be the best choice for them.
I remember well enough, when I was so confused myself a long time ago. I would have loved to find an article just like this one

Sylviane, you certainly went in-depth into 3 main online money-making-models.
And blogging I’m a huge fan of
I see things a little differently: I feel that people naturally gravitate towards money-making business models when they really, deeply pursue their passion and aim to express themselves.
This is easier said than done, because to express yourself deeply usually requires some… uh… intense experiences.
I didn’t have a working business model, until I went through homelessness, arrest, and betrayal — through all that I knew I really wanted to express myself through conversation, interaction, and online

Hi Jason,
Thanks for stopping by my post. I see that you went through a lot. Sometimes it takes us to go through a lot to find ourselves.
I went through a lot as well in some other ways, and learn a lot about myself as well.
Have a great week, Jason, and thanks again for your insights

Jason, I think I understand what you mean. I think those business models actually do quite well because they start their business with the idea of making money period. There is no build up and they already have a product or service that is either needed or wanted. For myself, I didn’t start with the idea of making money, but I won’t lie it helps. I would have to create a product where I felt there was a need and want for it to my liking. Motivation is key, but it’s not my “direct” at this moment. In time, it would be something I will entertain.

People tend to look for easy ways but they are all hard work. I particularly liked your part on affiilate marketing, good advice. I find networking hard because you have to rely on others to really make money at it. Reminds me of my Amway days.

Sylviane Nuccio
Hi Lisa,
Yes, affiliate marketing gives you more control over what kind of money you want to make that way. When it comes to Network Marketing, you can be stuck with companies that are cheating you out of what should be your money by taking over what they call your stronger leg.
When it comes to recruiting distributor it’s all about trying to get the right people, but it’s not always easy.
The good thing about network marketing, however, is the residual income which doesn’t exist in affiliate marketing.
Thanks for your comment and have a great day!

OMG! Lisa, been there and done that with Amway too. Now, I won’t knock anyone successful selling it, but I don’t want that hard either. Not only that, the up front costs are always a red flag that I will have to donate a large portion of my own money to make something work. I get how it works, but I am not a fan of it. Now with affiliate marketing, it’s a love and hate relationship depending on how you approach it. When I had my coupon site a while back, it was “work” and it was constant. I put more work in maintaining the website than actually making something off it. There are other models that work better than what I created, but that kind of business requires “time” and I would rather work smarter and not harder.

Hi Sylviane,
That’s some really great information. I believe too many people are just starting out eager to earn money, without having a strategy and understanding the different ways to earn money. And that there isn’t one easy way to earn money online. It’s more or less just as much work as a “regular job”. The only difference is that it’s a lot more fun

Hi Jens,
You’ve really made a good point here. A lot of folks are joining the online business world thinking that they are going to make money at the click of the mouse (and some bad gurus are certainly responsible for that). However, yes, you bet it does take work, especially as a beginner. Only when you are up there, you can relax a bit

I agree Jens. I think about Pat Flynn allot when it comes to stuff like this and how eloquently he has it down to a science. What’s even better is he lays it out for people to try and really gives feedback on what works and what doesn’t.

You have covered many topics here that are so important for an internet marketer to keep in mind. This post was great for the new comer as well as the seasoned professional.

What resonates with me the most is that your blog has to be the central point of business. I look at it as a “store” you give the best content you can give, you make connections with every comment on your blog, go to theirs and syndicate them.
All social platforms must bring them back to your central hub…your blog. This is where you can put a free or paid opt-in on it to create our mailing list which is gold in our business.
I like to do affiliate marketing also, but always remember that you need to keep branding yourself as you do.
Awesome post, I will pass this on,Donna

you are right, your blog should be like your “store” and like your store that is the center point where you want people to come back to. It’s also very important to go visit them as well. That’s how we build relationships.

All of these are definitely great ways to make money, but I agree that it is tiring to hear people talk about how much easier one is than the other. The truth is, even if you are working from home, marketing is tough! You’ve got to put your all into it and you (b)log several hours of the day in an effort to make money.
Sonia
I know what you mean, but I think how you market it also comes into play. I have seen some bad tactics used by some business owners to drive traffic to their site and got a big backlash later. It takes time to market, make money and sell your product. I think what people miss the most is how to build relationships with potentials customers online first. Thanks Steven for leaving a comment.

I’ve always been a bit wary of network marketing…seems like you end up selling soap products to your family and friends…and before you know it, they aren’t your friends anymore.
One area that you didn’t mention was providing a service online. For instance article writing or blog setting up. The beauty of this model is that you can earn as you learn. Many people start with ideas of becoming an affiliate marketer but initially it doesn’t pay so they write articles for other successful affiliate marketers. they can then model the success of these people as they go forward.

Hi Ade,
If you are in network marketing, you friends and family should be the last people you would ever want to talk to (sell to). This method is old and a bad one too. Good network marketers know better.
Selling your services as I do myself is a very good way to make money, indeed.

Hi Sonia and Sylviane! I’m still trying to figure out the best way to monetize my blog to be honest. Not an easy task. I don’t know where to find advertisers who might be interested in placing an advert on my site. I have been approached by some people to place sponsored reviews on my blog (which will include a permanent backlink to their site) but their budget for that sort of thing is extremely low (just a few measly dollars) and I’m not okay with that so I have not accepted that sort of thing. For now I only want to have adverts e.g. on the sidebar and it’s not easy to find advertisers. Any advice? Thanks so much.

The best thing to do would be to either post affiliate banners that goes with your blog or use Adsense or both. This would be the best way to start.
Once you have a very popular blog you can sell advertising spots.
